Feasibility Study for the Biogas Plant at Tomislavgrad Farm d.o.o.

Tomislavgrad Farm d.o.o. is one of the larger and more modern dairy farms in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an annual production exceeding 4.5 million liters of extra-class milk. Since its establishment in 2006, the company has continuously improved its operational technologies. The company’s management plans to further enhance the production process through the construction of a biogas plant, thereby addressing the management of solid manure, slurry, and liquid manure. The first step toward achieving this goal was the preparation of project documentation. In this context, the project of Tomislavgrad Farm d.o.o., titled “Preparation of the Feasibility Study, Conceptual Design, and Main Design for the Biogas Plant,” was approved under a public call issued by the Environmental Protection Fund of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the allocation of funds to support environmental protection programs and projects for 2017.

Following the signing of the contract on July 6, 2018, between the Fund and Tomislavgrad Farm d.o.o., the implementation of the project officially commenced. The total project value amounts to BAM 253,300.00, of which the Fund co-finances BAM 100,000.00.

The preparation of project documentation is scheduled over a period of 12 months. After completing the public procurement procedure, the preparation of the documentation was entrusted to Dvokut Pro d.o.o..

The objective of the project is to assess the feasibility of biogas production at Tomislavgrad Farm d.o.o. and to demonstrate that a biogas plant represents an effective solution for proper manure management. The project also contributes to achieving the objectives of key environmental strategic documents, such as the Federal Environmental Protection Strategy and NEAP.

To achieve these goals, the Feasibility Study, Conceptual Design, and Main Design for the biogas plant were developed. The Feasibility Study has been completed, and the completion of the Conceptual Design is expected in the near future.

As part of this process, research activities were conducted, including:

• sizing and dimensioning of the biogas plant
• field data collection
• identification of material flows to be used as input feedstock
• analysis of biomass quantities and moisture content

Additionally, visits to biogas plants in European Union countries were carried out.

During the preparation of the documentation, the specific characteristics of Tomislavgrad Farm d.o.o. and its surrounding environment were taken into account, and the size and capacity of the plant were planned accordingly.

This project will establish the necessary preconditions and lay a solid foundation for the construction of a biogas plant at the company. Tomislavgrad Farm d.o.o., the residents of the Municipality of Tomislavgrad, as well as relevant environmental protection institutions, will benefit from the construction of the biogas plant — primarily through the proper management of manure and farm by-products, thereby significantly improving public health safety and environmental responsibility. bIts importance is also evident at the cantonal and regional levels, as the Municipality of Tomislavgrad has been recognized for its potential in renewable energy sources. This project contributes to fulfilling the priorities and objectives set out in strategic documents at all levels of government.
